I've seen this trend pop up a lot on the Craigslist in my area and its bugging the hell out of me.
Why do people do this?? I've sold cars on CL and never bothered covering up the plate. I drive around all day and people can see my plates, so what's the point?

Amen. People do that on car forums a lot, too. And I never understood it. Far more people see my license plate number in the city each day than would ever see it via a pic of my car on a forum.

It's one of those things that everyone does because everyone else is doing it.
There is SOME legitimacy that someone could forge your plates if they had a car that was your make and model, and be in a different city/state so they would be less likely to get caught over it, but it's both stupid and risky to try something like that.
Using the finger though? That's just annoying. It's like putting excessive instagram filters over all your photos.

It has been on craigslist before craigslist itself.

Ya I don't usually mind people covering plates with a rag or something, but seeing a dirty ass finger annoys me like crazy.

I guess its just a matter of opinion. I prefer a finger to the dirty ol rag method.

Somehow I've just recently run across the finger over the plate. At least use a rag or something, people!

Haha I'm the complete opposite. I'd much rather see a rag than a big blurry finger sticking outta the bottom of the picture.

I understand covering up the plates for privacy and God knows what (I usually cover my bike's plate with my helmet liner),
But FUCK OFF WITH THE FINGERS.

I don't get it. When will you get a car?

I either spend two seconds in MS Paint, or stick a microfiber or something between the plate and the front bumper. That's just for here, and anywhere else on the internet. It's not like anybody ever said "HEY, I REALLY FEEL THE NEED TO READ THE LICENSE PLATE ON AN OLD ASS NISSAN THAT'S BEING SOLD ON THE INTERNET."

Still saving for the next car. I have a bit over 5 grand saved right now and I'm hoping to have around 7 or 8 saved when I really go to pick something up.

Especially if the finger is hairy, yet the nails are painted pink.

It matters. It fucking matters, bro. Everything is connected man. The wrong person takes a photo of your License Plate, scans the file like a QR code, then they got your address, vitals, occupation and income, then they can get the IP of your router and tap the baby cam to see how often you masterbate, then they can download your bank account and change all your eBay sales to one dollar a piece while banging your wife because they got so much of your info that she had no idea it wasn't you.
Everything's connected bro. Everything. Don't let anyone see anything. Don't let anyone even know what you look like. Burn your smartphone and wear a burqua.

Is it even possible to track a car cuz the plate? I've tried to track down a car via a plate (I was curious), I didn't get very far.

I know you can put plates in to check a Carfax, but that's probably as far as you can get with it.

I actually posted this question on a motorcycle forum that read, periodically. From what I gathered from the responses is that there is some sort of back-door method via the DMV where you can find out an owners name and location by tracing down the plate...then they'll go over and steal it, or something.

That seems like far too much effort considering license plates can be seen anywhere at any time haha

There is no point. Just idiots who think they're that important...in which case it wouldn't matter anyway. People are dumb.

It doesn't give you privacy...anyone in the world can see your plate as your drive your car around public roads all day.

I knew a old guy that kept a piece of cardboard over the VIN on his dash. He never really explained why, but he told me I should do the same. Something about how theive could look up the VIN and make a key for your vehicle. He drove a rusty 99 F-150 V6 that I'm sure you could steal with a brick and a flathead.

...both look really amateurish and annoying. Isn't it just easier to smudge/block out the plate via photoshop or even MS Paint???

I became obsessed with my disgust for this rampant idiocy and collected all my saved Craigslist fingers-over-license-plate photos onto Tumblr: http://dabidoh.tumblr.com/ with the hashtag #fingerplate for anyone who cares to contribute.
Don't understand why I feel a red mist when I see such rampant derp, but I do.
